If it can't be Don/Charlie I think Don/Cooper is my second favorite.
I'm also glad you didn't think the angst was OTT -- Charlie/Don just lends itself to heartbreak, even when I want to keep it on the lighter side.
Not at all! They definitely lend themselves to heartbreak, but we like it when it all works out in the end.
