FIC: Forgotten (spn, dean/castiel, PG)

I don't know what this is. I can't even call it speculation. More like 800 words of utter insanity. *desk*

Title: Forgotten
Pairing, fandom: dean/castiel, spn
Rating: PG-ish
Summary: He wants only one thing.

Notes: Honestly? I think I've been waiting three years for an excuse to do this to Dean. heh.

"The way I see it, you're in a whole world of trouble this time, Castiel."

The voice doesn't surprise him.

Or more accurately, the Voice doesn't surprise him, because of course the news had gone out immediately, spread like hellfire the very moment Dean's human lungs had taken a breath as probably half of heaven had taken flight to find him. He'd fully expected to be found eventually.

It's just the choice of vessel that's a little surprising.

Castiel hunches his own borrowed shoulders and shoves his hands deeper into the pockets of the coat he wears. He nods at the body he'd last seen staggering groggily out the door of this very shed, one arm slung across Dean's back.

"You might have picked a host he wouldn't miss."

"I was in a hurry." The Presence in Bobby's body shrugs. "And he's gone to find the brother. He won't notice this one's gone for awhile."

Castiel sighs. With a whiff of rebellion in the offing, he's probably lucky any of his colleagues took time to become corporeal at all.

"So you just couldn't wait," It says, adopting Bobby's easy drawl. "Couldn't keep that hair trigger in check just a little longer?"

"Lilith had no right to him," Castiel says, as he's been saying to anyone who will listen since the moment Dean had passed through the Hell Gate. "The deal itself was in violation."

"No one's debatin' that. But it don't change the fact that you didn't have permission to break him out." Bobby shakes his head. "Shit, boy, it would've all shook out eventually, you know that. Why couldn't you just wait on the paperwork to clear?"

"I couldn't leave him there," Castiel says, so low no one human would have been able to hear.

The smile is too thin, too sly for the open face carrying it. "Well, that's your choice, of course. But now there's hell to pay."

Castiel feels a chill. "What are they saying?" He's not sure he really wants to know.

Bobby sits back against the table, arms crossed. "That you might not get away with with flaunting the rules this time. That you might be joining your rescued exile sooner than you think. On more of... an equal footing, shall we say."

Castiel turns his face away. He won't think about that now. All things in their time.

The silence stretches and Bobby's gaze on Castiel's face is cool, considering. "You do look awful pretty, though," he says, finally. "Did it work?"

Castiel closes his eyes. "He didn't recognize me."

"Well, what did you expect? It's not like you could take him back with you, anyway, you know that." When Castiel doesn't answer, Bobby tips his head in the exact appearance of honest curiosity. "You do know that, right?"

Castiel has to swallow bitterness before he can speak. "I know."

He's known for centuries.

"So what exactly do you want?" Bobby asks.

And at that Castiel takes flight, flings himself up, through the roof and into the night, because Dean had asked him that, too.

"What do you want?"

Asked in a voice that shook, all the bravado bled out of him, and that had pushed Castiel over the edge. It had made him crowd Dean close against the wall so Dean could feel every part of this beautiful body that Castiel had chosen for him, for him, and he'd watched as Dean's eyes had gone wide and his mouth had gone firm with fear and with anger, but with nothing that could be taken for knowledge, no matter how hard Castiel stared into his eyes to find it.

As the night opens up around him he answers again, the way he answered Dean in the pathetic human voice that is utterly insufficient for the scope of what he feels.

"I want you to remember."

Aww!

You have no idea, hon, how hard it was to NOT read this when it first came out! I swore I wouldn't read Castiel fic while I was struggling with my own, so I once I published mine I high tailed it over and got to reading!

This was a surprise (ha! revelation would have been a punny word for it!) but I liked the idea of Castiel desperately wanting Dean to remember him and his sadness when there's not even a glimmer. It introduces all sorts of ideas into my head and that's when you know it's good fic - when you've fired up someone's imagination enough that the story, in a way, takes flight - it becomes more than what's on the page.

Lovely as always my dear. Keep up with the Dean!fic. You know how much I adore him... And you...
